I want to use my bike solely for short distance multi-mode commutes - mainly utilising the train, occasionally car - where I will be riding less than 5 miles. Convenience and ease of fold are most important, speed and performance, less so?
There is a very good selection of compact bikes that concentrate on a fast, simple fold. Typically they feature small wheels and slightly compromised performance, but are perfectly adequate for distances of up to 3-5 miles. Our recommendations are the Mobiky, Gocyle, Pacific Carry Me and Airnimal Joey.
I want to use my bike for multi-mode commutes, but sometimes want to do the whole ride by bike. I also want to use the bike for leisure, exercise and sports riding?
The typical small wheeled folder is not designed for this more demanding, performance-wise, type of use. Look at Airnimal and Pacific for folding bikes that perform as well as conventional bike. Airnimal bikes, in particular, fold quickly, but ride well enough to have been ridden to a bronze medal in the World Triathlon Championship. Our recomendations are the Airnimal Joey, Airnimal Chameleon and the Pacific Reach.
I want a bike to take with me on holiday or business that is also capable of being ridden like a proper bike?
Look at the Airnimal range of bikes. They have a first, quick fold for easily fitting into trains or cars and a second (5 minute) fold for fitting into a standard-size suitcase for airplane travel.
Most folding bikes have small wheels. I understand that this makes for a more compact fold, but how does it affect performance?
There are advantages and disadvantages to using small wheels. Small wheesl can fall into small holes making them less suitable for serious off-road use; they also, because of the shorter spokes, tend to be give a harsher ride than a larger wheel, and many small wheel specialists tend to build in some kind of suspension to compensate for this. On the other hand, smaller wheels are very strong and there are some weight and aerodynamic advantages to be gained.
It is sometimes thought that small wheels don't handle as well as larger wheels, but handling is much more a function of geometry and a well designed smaller wheeled bikes can handle just as well as their larger counterparts.
What about spares and maintenance?
Most folding bikes use mainly standard components, but it is worth checking that any dedicated spares and accessories are readily available.
Can I carry some luggage on my folder?
Most folders are fitted, or can be fitted, with racks to take standard bicycle panniers and bags. Some folders feature dedicated bag carrying systems.
Do folding bikes come with bags or cases for transportation?
They generally either come with a soft carry bag or 'throw over' cover. Some like the Airnimal range are designed to fit into a check-in size of suitcase.
